Sacramento has a large artist community that is steadily growing in recognition. Downtown’s Second Saturday event is attempting to draw more art appreciation and exposure to the cultural life of our city. Numerous galleries populate midtown Sacramento, Folsom, Roseville, and surrounding communities that offer opening receptions and lectures as well as contests. During the festive season in November and December, festivals of arts and crafts begin occurring all over at schools, churches and halls. Some are tiny little gatherings designed to support their schools and local artists while others are boasted (with good cause) to be the largest art festival occurring in the city.

The Sacramento Harvest Festival can easily be considered a premium event by size alone but this year’s entertainment booking is ample reason to draw attendees. Tom Rigney and Flambeau often participate in the Sacramento Jazz Festival and if you missed that event this year, you can now catch the virtuoso fiddling passion in action at the Harvest Festival. “Flambeau specializes in fiery Cajun and zydeco two-steps, low-down blues, funky New Orleans grooves, and heartbreakingly beautiful ballads and waltzes. (They were) voted Best Cajun/Zydeco Band of 2004 by the West Coast Blues Hall of Fame.” Watching Rigney play is worth the price of entry alone if you enjoy seeing and hearing music that is filled with the obvious passion and love of the artist.

The entertainment will also include The Fargo Brothers, who have a unique style of roots Rock ‘n Roll and are “are known for their vocal harmonies and tight ensemble playing.” Strolling entertainers will include some children’s favorites with Mama Claus and Eddie the Elf, WC Willy dressed as Elvis on stilts, and Washboard Willy with Wishboard Wanda.

The Festival will showcase over 24,000 American made gifts and food items. One of the primary differences of the Sacramento Harvest Festival is its greater number of crafters and specialty items that may include woodwork, toys, fudge, oils, marinades for the season, jewelry, pottery, bath and body items, clothing, and home décor. Fine art in many mediums will, of course, also be available. A festival attendee can expect to find purchasable items in a cost range from $5.00 into the thousands. All participating vendors undergo a “rigid jury process to be selected as a featured artisan.”
