For whatever deep psychological reason, I am hung up on the truth. I accept and teach there are valid reasons to lie but those are rare. Akin to the use of a gun or knife, it is allowed but an exception.
In grand conspiracy between the government and media we are fed monthly 'unemployment' figures. High-rated headlines today, November 7, are the unemployment rate. As with cars, there are different categories of unemployment. We are mostly fed, like protected children, the 'official jobless rate.'
That rate is 10.2% but fails to include those who are underemployed, the self-employed or those who have fallen off the statistical radar screen, people who have given up looking for work. The broader measure of U.S. unemployment is 17.5%, a bit of a shocking number.
My points are simple: First, tell us the truth or give us both statistics each month. This is the job of the government and media. Do we really need to be sheltered like children? Is it like actor Jack Nicholson's famous movie line, 'You can't handle the truth'?
Second: Let's keep it real. If the majority of workers are actually working, then tell us that. If the broader measure of unemployment is 17.5% then tell us that the employment rate is 82.5%. The glass is more than half full. To do so is a perfect example of KISS: Keep It Simple and Successful.
