As with all things, government regulation can be good or bad. A wonderful law is the one that allows all of us to get a free credit report from each of the three major credit-reporting agencies. We are legally allowed one each year from each credit agency.
That's the benefit. The challenge (problem) is what I deem unethical companies leading us astray. This issue is blazing the American media starting Wednesday, November 3, 2009. One of the biggies (I avoid mentioning those who do wrong) paid a settlement fee to the Federal Trade Commission for misdeeds. One company, in an Internet search engine, uses the term, "Official Site." That is a play on words. The ONLY correct website for the government allowed credit reports is: http://AnnualCreditReport.com
Unlike the news agencies, I won't tell about the others. It doesn't matter. It is akin to your asking for directions and I tell you other streets to not take. The bad sites will give you a free credit report and also sign you up for a monthly membership fee until you cancel. Knowing the human tendency to procrastinate, that can add up to a lot of monthly fees from a lot of people.
I went to the real, "Official" site. It looks like any other site on the internet. Nothing special and you have to search to realize it actually is the proper site. It should end its web name with .gov instead of .com. Also, it should be extremely clear that it really is the proper site.
Oh, and I won't just sit here and complain. I'm going to contact the Federal Trade Commission with my suggestions.
