Yesterday the bombshell dropped that NY1 reporter and author Dominic Carter has been accused by his wife of beating her, but she is recanting the story and he is trying to clear his name and reputation.
Immediately what comes to mind is not that a woman had her husband falsely charged with domestic abuse, but a wife who was beaten then got scared and had to withdraw her accusation.
The pictures of her attack, that she now claims was from a day laborer she picked up and doesn't know the name of, were sprawled all over yesterday's newspaper. Blood behind her left ear, swollen lip, and a sullen face were all reminiscent of the infamous Rihanna photos that shocked fans worldwide who loved Chris Brown into believing he actually beat his girlfriend.
Of course Carter, isn't as famous as Brown but there is definitely a level of surprise that permeates the story.
I actually attended a small event at a college where he spoke about his life starting from a rocky childhood, he wrote about his abusive childhood in "No Momma's Boy", to his career as a reporter at NY1. He even gushed about how in love he was when he saw his wife for the first time at college, when he was a student and she was an administrator. The talk he gave was nice and at the end he even coaxed his wife to coming up on stage with him, and I remember watching her reluctantly walk up there.
The accusations of abuse go back for awhile with cops responding to altercations a few times at their home. Those reports could corroborate her claim of physical and verbal abuse that occurred in October of '08, and that she now denies and blames on a mysterious worker.
Perhaps if Carter came off as a little more humble in this situation the story would seem a little more believable, but he was even reported as doing major namedropping in court to get the judge to dismiss the case and seems more concerned with his job than his marriage. NY1 has taken him off the station for now and until this situation is resolved.
Of course, they both now might be telling the truth, but ultimately it will be left up to a judge, despite the fact it reeks of the Hiram Monserrate case. The Senator who beat his girlfriend and was seen on a security surveillance tape dragging her about their apartment building halls before taking her to a hospital. She apparently was too petrified to admit it on stand and changed her story from he abused me to it was and accident and I fell, in the end he was charged with a misdemeanor.
That case was definitely a reminder that the victims aren't always brave enough or strong enough to stand up to their attackers, especially when it's someone they love.
