Beauty sleep is not a myth and has been scientifically proven.  Which is why beauty and hair experts preach the importance of a good night's sleep to look and feel your best.

Beauty sleep actually occurs during the nightly cycle of deep sleep, known as stage 3 and 4, when the body secretes growth hormones designed to help repair and rebuild body tissues such as bone and muscle.

Even though beauty sleep is essential, experts on sleep disorders believe the majority of people today get less sleep, beauty or otherwise, than they need.  Experts believe the sleep shortfall can range anywhere from 60 to 90 minutes below the ideal.  They theorize people of all ages cheat on sleep and don't even know they're doing it.

Due to hectic lifestyles many people try to get by on six hours sleep or less when they really need seven, eight or even more to feel ideally vigorous and healthy.

Although sleep deprivation is generally defined as a sleep disorder characterized by having too little sleep, it can be caused by a variety of factors either voluntary or involuntary and can be either chronic or acute.   Long-term sleep deprivation has proven to cause death in lab animals.

Are You Sleep Deprived

How to know if you're sleep deprived? If you need to use an alarm clock in the morning to wake up, hit the snooze alarm multiple times, constantly feel tired or have difficult concentrating or getting through your normal day.

A chronic sleep-restricted state often causes fatigue, daytime sleepiness, clumsiness and even unexplained or unplanned weight gain. It can also cause skin eruptions, dark undereye circles, scalp disorders and disrupt normal hair growth cycles.

Another reason why sleep is considered important in achieving ultimate beauty.

How To Reverse Sleep Deprivation

Sometimes sleep deprivation can occur even if you go to bed early and plan to get a full eight or night hours or sleep.  Some of the known causes can include sleep disorders which may go undiagnosed and can include sleep apnea, snoring, sleep walking and restless leg syndrome to name just a few.

If you are making a conscious effort to get your necessary beauty sleep and are falling short you may wish to do more research to determine if you have a sleep disorder which can be easily resolved.

How do you know you're getting enough beauty rest?  If you go to bed and sleep until you wake without an alarm, it's your body's way of letting you know exactly how much sleep you really need. Always trust your body and honor it's needs and you'll be on the right track to optimal health and beauty.
