Heidi Baker, missionary to Mozambique, is tonight a missionary to Washington.
Baker is in Washington as part of a week-long conference called "Great Grace DC", an event designed to bring Jesus to the District afresh.
Baker and her husband, Rolland, came to war-torn Mozambique in 1995. According to an article in Charisma magazine, Rolland first set his heart on the country in 1990, when Time magazine reported it to be poorest nation in the world.
Upon arriving in Mozambique, the Bakers were given a terribly run-down orphanage and have been taking in children ever since. Besides founding Mozambique's top-rated public schools (which are deliberately filled by orphans) and numerous other projects, their hands are always in the dirt with one person, the one in front of them. That is who they are there for.
Baker has recently been a guest speaker at MIT and Harvard, and enjoys doing so after giving up a wealthy life in Laguna Beach, California years ago in order to show the world the love she knows.
"What does love look like?" is one of the questions Baker often poses to the Western church. After years of seeing orphans find a home, deaf ears and blind eyes open, handicapped people miraculously being healed, and the hungry fed, her conclusion is that love looks like something. It looks like you stopping for the one in front of you.
That's where Jesus likes to be.
Baker will be speaking at 7:30 PM and tomorrow morning at Chevy Chase Baptist Church, at 5671 Western Avenue NW. Find more information here, and arrive early to ensure finding a seat!
Heidi and Rolland Baker are the founders of Iris Ministries.
