Yesterday, Newark Mayor and rising political star, Cory Booker gave talk show host Conan O'Brien payback.  He put him on Newark Airport's 'no-fly list'.  Newark Airport is one three airports that services the New York Metropolitan Area.

Of course, the ban was tongue in cheek.  O'Brien had poked fun of the City of Newark on his show and Booker responded:

Unfortunately, for millions of people, most of whom are American citizens, the no-fly list is no laughing matter.  20,000 real people are being added to the list each month.  It's estimated that over 1 million people are now on the list.  Is it really possible that there are 1 million terrorist suspects in the US?  Not only is the list extremely bloated, many of these people have common names.  Odds are good that a Jane Smith is on the list.  Good luck if you happen to share the name.  While airport security officers are busy interrogating the wrong Jane Smith, wouldn't it be that much easier for a real terrorist to get through?

It's estimated that the Department of Homeland Security has spent anywhere from $300 million to almost $1 billion on the no-fly list since 2002.  Its value in protecting our security is questionable at best.  Statistics about its actual cost and results are classified.
