"The night is darkest before the dawn," Harvey Dent

Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart) said it best “the night is darkest just before the dawn.” Unfortunately for DC’s heroes it seems, as there is no dawn in sight. The third issue of the Blackest Night shows the black lantern corp growing exponentially and the heroes of earth struggling to keep the darkness from consuming earth.

Throughout the third installment of the Blackest Night, the readers get a deeper understanding of the turmoil that is sweeping earth’s mightiest heroes. Wally West (The Flash) and Hal Jordan (Green Lantern) scrounge up whatever heroes they can find to help defeat their undead foes when an unexpected ally appears with valuable information that will help turn the tides.

This series is quickly becoming one of my favorites of the year. Blackest Night is completely different than its predecessor Marvel Zombies. Geoff Johns, writer of The Flash and Green Lantern does a fantastic job of delving deeper into these heroes. Jordan and West come to realize that their shoot first, ask questions later technique of heroics isn’t going to be effective against the black lanterns. The most interesting twist on the genre is that these zombies feed on their victim’s emotion and heart. The only way for our heroes to defeat their foes is to remove emotion from the equation, which is impossible to do when you’re fighting against your best friend. This series is definitely living up to its title.
