Yesterday, my Examiner colleague Mark Stelzner wrote a great post comparing the job search to planning a wedding. You should READ HIS POST HERE.
It made me think about something I think some job seekers overlook - the importance of planning and thinking ahead. A story for your consideration...
I don't live in a rural area, but there are deer who spend a lot of time across the street. They eat the apples on the tree and graze on the neighbor's unmowed lawn. I'm not talking just one deer - it's a little group of them - sometimes 5 or 6 - all wandering around like they own the place.
Since I began observing their habits - they congregate at dusk and late at night - I have started slowing down when I drive home during those hours, just in case one decides to jump out into the road. This has proven to be good planning on my part, as their pattern seems set, they are pretty skittish and have a tendency to step into the road and I have avoided a collision. A little bit of forethought has saved me a lot of aggravation, time and money, not to mention a deer's life!
If you are NOT planning your search, you are essentially asking for a collision. No, not necessarily with deer, but with something even longer lasting - unemployment, underemployment or - even worse - miserable employment. Take the wheel of your own job hunt. Take some time to plan things out. Where do you want to go? How will you get there? What will you find once you are there? What can you do to make things easier on yourself? You deserve a great job. Start taking some steps to get there. I can help!
