In the world of remodeling there are many steps and processes. The last time we met I talked to you about the very beginning of this adventure. That, of course, is first deciding on what you want to change, how dramatic the change will be and deciding what you can actually afford to change. This can be a grueling process in and of itself…usually because there is more than one option on the table.

Once you’ve established for sure the space you want to change the next step is figuring out the style. Once again this can be a tormenting. Not to self-advertise, but this step can be the first (of sometimes many) steps that require a designer’s hand to help guide you. Even if you know exactly what you want, using a design professional is still going to be a safer bet. This doesn’t mean that you have to do everything through them, but as far as resources and expertise go, they’re better versed than most. Most design professionals will offer as little or as much design as you want. If a consultation or second opinions to fully designing your, we're here for you. Another option when you go to choose a style is to have a designer come up with a concept design, within your budget, that you can take and work from yourself. This is a cost effective way to have a fabulously designed space.

If you choose to not go the route of a designer, you’re not hurting my feelings if you choose this, then start choosing a style by taking out a pen and a pad of paper. Write down the ambiance you’d like your space to have and the kind of functions that are required of it. Form really does follow function in the best spaces. If it helps you, sit in the space while you’re doing this. If you’re changing the function of the space entirely, i.e. switching your living room with your kitchen, then sit in your original space while you list.

After you’ve decided on the statement you want your space to make it’s time to hit the magazines and the web. These are two of the best resources available for ideas. I use them both all the time. I don’t copy ideas exactly, but I do glean inspiration from design and home focused magazines. If you don’t want to spend a small fortune on magazines (I understand because I don’t want to either), then peruse your local bookstore, write down what magazines and ideas that spoke to you, then go to the magazine’s website and see if you can print them out. After you printed, ripped, circled and perhaps even drawn, compile these files into a folder or notebook to keep them organized.

In conclusion I want to say that this should be one of the most enjoyable parts of your remodel…so take your time and if you get stressed just step away for a little while. I’d also like to say that you don’t have to have one type of style…eclecticism is encouraged! It makes it personal and adds your character to the space, and that's what remodeling is all about!
