As you saw in last week’s articles the theme was taking our New Year’s resolution to our homes i.e. by organizing our Christmas decorations and by a couple of simple freshening tips. I’m going a bit more in depth this week. As I also stated last week, this could be the opportune time to do some serious face lifting to your home. If you rent your house or condo you could still do some remodeling, but please, please, please check with your landlord first. It is there house and they have a right to be apprised of what’s going on there. If the remodel is agreeable to both parties you might consider dividing the cost in some way. If you are an apartment renter in a complex then well, painting, new furniture, and accessories are about all you can do!

There are a couple options for starting your project. One is obviously decide what you want to change and where. The other is figuring out your remodel budget and then deciding the project that it will fit and benefit you the most. Deciding what you want to change can be easy…in fact if you’re like me you can easily decide that many things need changing or improving! Unfortunately most of our budgets don’t cover multiple projects at once.

Unless you’ve been living in a hole, or just haven’t cared until now, you know that bathrooms and kitchens are where you need to start with cosmetic makeovers. Adding a media room and finishing your basement are great options as well. Both are popular and if done right you'll get your money back when you sell. If you’re not sure what’s going on in the inner workings of your home then a home inspection is a good investment. Like our bodies, it’s best we take care of our homes from the inside out. As an interior designer, my heart is in the inside of a home, but I do concede that correcting a structural problem should come before correcting that hideous laminate countertop. On that note, I’ll close for today and leave you to wonder about your home and dream of the possibilities!
