It’s autumn! The air is finally crisp and the leaves are bright and cheery It’s time to take out the spicy smelling candles, light the fireplace and break out all of those autumnal decorations that you’ve hid away for a year. Ah, yes, the decorations! That’s where a lot of fall fun exists. Unfortunately for many of our budgets it’s not so fun! That, however, doesn’t have to stop you from getting some fabulous fall finery.

This may be the perfect season to use what is right outside your front door, or someone you know (with permission of course). There are leaves, acorns and pinecones. Herbs like lavender, and rosemary. Moss and branches are great as well. It’s also a great time to visit pick your own farms for gourds, and pumpkins that we all know make lovely decorations. In-season fruits like pears and apples can make an ever changing piece of art on your table. Simply get out a large colander, fill it with apples and/or pears, place on the table and watch it morph as you and your family eat your way through. There have been art exhibits done the same way with candy and gum. As people go through and take a piece it changes the art. The function appeals to the budget minded and to all you art enthusiasts.

If you’re not into bringing the real outdoors in, and are on a budget, don’t despair. At this point in the season artificial decorations are at sale prices in many places. Retailers are trying to get their fall inventory out to make way for Christmas. Silk flowers, faux gourds, and blown glass pumpkins make wonderful alternatives and are quite budget friendly. Make sure you get the best quality you can afford and choose pieces that you’ll like for the next year. Recession or not, there is no need to have a completely different look every year. If you already have a substantial collection of fall goodies choose perhaps one or two new pieces to mix it up and make it fresh.

Getting the most of fall may be when there is mixed media. Use real pumpkins and gourds, but add silk leaves and flowers to mix in. This way you get the longest lasting of fresh (pumpkins) and faux (flowers). For those who say that silk flowers look fake…you need to reeducate yourself as to what’s available. There are many, many silk florals that not only look real, but also feel real. For those who are floral snobs (in a good way!) using chrysanthemums is a great way to go. They are hardy, cost effective and come in a plethora of colors.

No matter how you choose to decorate your home this season, remember that it’s not about how lavish it is, but how it makes your home become more of a haven for you and your family.
