Missing in action since 2002, the fifth generation of the Chevy Camaro, is back in full force for 2010, taking the streets of Atlanta by storm in the here and now! Heads are turning left and right, with necks stretched far in an attempt to catch a mere glimpse at one of the exciting new “it cars,” from an American car manufacturer---a day many thought we’d never see!

Born in 1967 to compete with Ford’s Mustang, the modern day version of this American classic that fits right in on the same line with baseball, hot dogs, apple pie and jazz, has incorporated the best of the past with modern day technology and conveniences to create a car that looks good and performs. For example, if you look at its predecessors—in particular, from 1969, you’ll note the similarities in the overall shape and styling most notably in the protruding hood that nearly conceals today’s high-intensity headlights. And I love the gills on the rear panels-another token from the past. Even in the cockpit, with its many gauges (positioned down by the gear shifter) that people like my buddy and luxury car owner Stefan, wonder “what’s all that about?” there is a definite degree of homage to the yesteryears, in this modern day predecessor. At the same time, the more full and solid look (especially from rear to front) of the new Camaro is far more competitive with the more high-end foreign sports cars on the market today.

In terms of performance, Chevy scores in numerous ways beginning with a never power deficient 304 horsepower, 3.6 liter V6 engine that comes standard, with an optional six speed automatic transmission that gets even better gas mileage. And speaking of gas mileage, I’m impressed! Need more power, there is an available 400 horsepower engine, with a six speed automatic transmission, or a 426 horsepower engine with manual transmission, both available in the SS (Super Sport) trim level, which like many of the more high-end foreign sports cars, comes with Brembo brakes. With the ability to do 0 to 60 in 5 seconds, the power behind the new Camaro supercedes its predecessors, placing Chevy back in the hot seat in the eyes of fans unwilling and unable to shell out Corvette money.

After a week behind the wheel, I can honestly say, the Camaro is not only a real looker, turning heads everywhere (especially in rally yellow, similar to the model used in the recently released movie “Transformers”). It holds to the road quite nice, even while coming around the corner. The turning radius might not be as tight as the Aston Martin’s V8 Vantage (http://www.examiner.com/x-2127-Atlanta-Autos-Examiner~y2009m2d5-Sweets-for-the-sweet-2009-Aston-Martin-V8-Vantage), but hangs right in there at minimum with the 2009 Dodge Challenger (http://www.examiner.com/x-2127-Atlanta-Autos-Examiner~y2009m2d3-Dodge-Challenger-think-about-Daisy-Duke), another blast from the past. Kudos for the interior seating, which kept me held in place at every turn, without sliding all over the place. And again, I can’t say enough good things about the gas mileage, especially when I think of how this car used to drink up gas in the past!

The 2LT Coupe trim level has a base of $26,580. Dress it up with another $1,450 for the RS (Rally Sport) package to include 20” rims and wheels, high intensity headlights (like the more upscale whips), a rear spoiler and RS unique tail lamps. Even without the RS package, Camaro has 19” painted aluminum wheels.

As for the fluff stuff, Chevy placed a thumping 9-speaker stereo system in the 2LT trim level, with USB port and auxiliary jack for MP3 connection. And of course it has satellite radio (complimentary for three months) and OnStar, offering turn by turn directions (complimentary for the first 12-months) in absence of a navigation system. Of my fluff favorites (probably yours too), yes, it has Bluetooth and automatic headlights. Like some of the other more expensive whips, Camaro has mood lighting on the interior door panels by way of a strip of light that runs across in the shape of a rainbow.

All in all, most will agree that the 2010 Chevy Camaro is THE best yet!
