2009 Volkswagen CC: Unlike any other VW you've driven (VW)

Whip of the week: 2009 Volkswagen CC VR6 4Motion

By Michael Andre Adams

Price $39,300 base / $42,630 loaded
MPG 18 city / 27 highway
Annual Fuel $1,371 (15,000 miles @ $1.92 / gallon-premium)

Flossin Points: It’s coupe-esque looks (thing Mercedes CLS)

Have you seen this car? The first time I set eyes on this hot, new design, I was forced to do a double take thinking, “DAMN, what car was that?”

Later I caught up with it at a traffic light where a thorough gaze revealed an aerodynamic body shape, sleek side body lines, frameless windows and doors, sloped trunk, exterior signal mirrors and just enough bling on the front grill to tastefully define its luxury status. I thought ofr sure I was looking at a car in the $45-$50K range. I was so floored to discover a $39K base inclusive of nearly everything imaginable in a mid-range luxury vehicle, except navigation and rear view camera, both of which are included in the Technology Package for an additional $2,640.

By the time I got to try this car for myself I felt like a kid in a candy store! I got into a model with black interior accentuated by the excitement of chrome interior trim. The next thing I noticed after slipping the remote into the slot and holding it in to start the car was the reflection of the impressive BI-XENON automatic headlights. You can’t help to miss them as they perform a self-leveling movement guaranteed to impress every onlooker, especially at night. And yes, it has daytime running lights as well.

Although it was not the easiest Bluetooth pairing on the market--which is surprising since the process is such a breeze on Audi vehicles (same family), I managed to connect my Treo. A quick set of the side view mirrors offering heat and fold features, followed by a rear view adjustment (with HomeLink feature), followed by the lowering of the power rear sunshade and it was time to get my theme music together. With the iPod connection conveniently located and inclusive of the necessary connectors, I plugged in, then did a quick program of my favorite on the Sirius Satellite stations--all of which played amazingly well on the powerful Dynaaudio premium sound system—and I was ready to roll.

Reminiscent of a coupe, the handling of this car is tight and smooth thanks to a host of technological features to stabilize the vehicle at all times. It took curves like a champ for a car in its class! And should gas go crazy again as it did a few months back, take delight in the 3.6L VR6 engine, with a six-speed tiptronic automatic transmission and VW/Audi’s legendary 4Motion-four wheel drive offering not just great acceleration, but superb gas mileage.

Oh, and when it began to rain the intermittent wipers with rain sensor speed control made all of the adjustments while the automatic climate control kept me at a comfortable 69 degrees. Now that’s living nice and large under $45K!
