Albert Pujols and Mark McGwire were only teammates for a year before McGwire retired in 2001, but two of the best sluggers in Cardinals history may soon be teaming up once again.
The Cardinals have called a press conference today at 11 a.m. CT at Busch Stadium, and media reports suggest that the team will be announcing Tony La Russa's return as manager, along with the addition of McGwire as hitting coach.
McGwire shot to fame in 1998 when he broke the record for most home runs in a single season with 70. He came under suspicion in 2005 after former A's teammate Jose Canseco said in his book that McGwire had previously used steroids.
McGwire is close to La Russa, having played for La Russa when he managed both the A's and the Cardinals.
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch is reporting that La Russa will sign a two-year contract that will include a raise from his previous two-year, $8.5 million contract.
Perhaps these moves from the Cardinals' front office will aid the team in attempts to extend Pujols' contract. Pujols said recently that the ability of the team to remain competitive, and not money, is his primary concern in negotiating a new contract.
