Our off-leash dog parks are as varied and unique as us Angelenos. Sepulveda Basin Off-Leash Dog Park is an extraordinary dog park because it offers three separate and fully enclosed sections for dogs and their owners. It is very common for many parks to have two sections – big and small, but sometimes I believe a third section is completely warranted.
At Sepulveda Basin the three sections are large dogs, small / timid dogs and dogs 20 pounds
or less. Rufus, my red smooth miniature dachshund, and I are regular dog park visitors and it is common to find big but timid dogs in the small dog section. It happens all the time at Whitnall and Laurel Canyon dog parks, and I personally get it. Sometimes the older or shy dogs do better in the small dog section than the big dog section, but sometimes our small dogs and their owners just want the peace of mind of being around other small dogs.
Dog owners, vets and dog behaviorist all agree dogs should be socialized with dogs of all sizes, shapes, gender and breed because it will make our dogs well adjusted balanced members of the dog community at large, but that is a process and some small dogs and their owners need to get there gradually as their confidence builds.
The Los Angeles Chihuahua Club on Meetup.com is a good example of a dog club that limits it membership to dog s that are 10 pounds and less. Small dogs and big dogs are naturally related and can easily get along with each other, but my dachshund cannot play as easily with my greyhound, Jake. Rufus is 11 pounds and Jake is 65 pounds and one playful swat of his paw to Rufus’ long back could cause serious injury. Rufus will hike Runyon Canyon with the big dogs and not skip a beat, but it’s nice to visit a dog park and let our furry kids play with dogs similar in statue and size. Sepulveda Basin allows us that opportunity.
Moreover, Sepulveda Basin offers lots of space and shade for our dogs and is a great meetup location for dog groups. Check it out today.
