Although the crisis may not be in Los Angeles’ backyard, what happens to the general dog loving community affects us all. The incident also underscores a few things at home: our continuing need to spay and neuter our animals and to adopt not shop as the LA Animal Services says.
I personally continued to be in amazement when I see unneutered dogs and local dog parks.
I am personally not a proponent of giving animals as a gift without advance planning and thought, but if you have found yourself considering it for some time, the upcoming Valentine holiday might be a good occasion to adopt a dog or cat from your local shelter or rescue organization.
When we can elevate the burden of homeless pets in our city we can then offer help to places like Mount Vernon. We have to work together to solve our pet overpopulation and the senseless killing of animals. This is a problem that is 100% solvable with increased awareness and education. In the absence of adopting, concerned citizens can also make donations or volunteer locally and abroad.
All dogs and cats deserve a loving forever home.
