Who wants to be a millionaire/murderer?
Warner Bros.

The Box opens up (pun intended) in Rochester theatres this weekend. Cameron Diaz and James Marsden (Spider-Man, X-Men) star as a couple who receive a dubious gift: a box that can give them $1 million. But if they use it, a stranger somewhere in the world dies. They have 24 hours to decide if they want to become millionaires and murderers.

Thinking outside The Box, there’s The Fourth Kind. It’s not a sequel to Close Encounters of the Third Kind, but fans of the classic will know there are degrees of alien encounters. The fourth—alien abduction—is covered in this thriller set in Nome, Alaska. An alarming percentage of the population has gone missing over the last few decades. The film stars Milla Jovovich.

And we enter the holiday season with yet another take on Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. This time it’s an animated 3-D version called Disney’s A Christmas Carol. Jim Carrey is Scrooge and three other parts.

Watch this space next week for a review of the apocalyptic thriller2012.

Also still in theatres and of interest to sci-fi fans:

Astro Boy
Cirque de Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant
Paranormal Activity
Saw VI
Where The Wild Things Are
