Today ends the series on the destinations that you can visit on cruises out of Baltimore on the Celebrity Mercury. The last port to be discussed, but certainly not the least, is San Juan, Puerto Rico. San Juan is the capital and largest city of Puerto Rico, which is in turn a territory of the United States.
Puerto Rico has had a long and colorful history, and was ceded to the United States by the Treaty of Paris ending the Spanish-American War. The military forts of El Morro and San Cristobal are among the major sightseeing highlights.
A very popular excursion takes you to the Bacardi Rum Distillery. Here you can learn about the sugarcane growing history of the island, tour the distillery to learn how the rum is produced, and of course, get to sample the results. There is also a gift shop where you can buy some rums that are normally not sold in the United States mainland, and thus make nice souvenirs or gifts for your friends.
About 30 miles south of San Juan is the city of Caguas. On the grounds of a former sugar mill is the Botanical and Cultural Garden of Caguas. You can see the ruins of the sugar mill in addition to the many trees and plants.
Old San Juan is just a long walk or short cab ride from the pier depending on which dock your ship uses. There are numerous old church's and public plazas, and the area has become home to museums, cafe's and shops. A free public trolley system can take you from one are to another.
The only sailing of the Mercury that takes you to San Juan is the 11-night sailing of Oct. 18, 2010.
