A would-be armed bandit led police on a wild chase after shots were fired Friday afternoon during an attempt armored truck heist on Powder Mill Rd at Allview Dr in the Calverton area.

It started around 3:40 p.m., when the suspect attempted to rob the armored truck. Police say the suspect cut the truck off in traffic and fired his assault rifle into the vehicle.  An officer happened to be in the area and arrived shortly after the attempt ambush.  The officer fired, and the driver’s side window of the suspect vehicle was shot out.  But the suspect was able to flee.

Police briefly lost track of the suspect car, but later found it on Manheim Ave and Baltimore Ave in Beltsville.

Minutes later, police learned that the suspect forced his way into a house in the 5000 block of Lexington Ave (below). The occupants safely escaped. An officer later shot the suspect in the 11500 block of Queen Anne Avenue around 4:40 p.m.

Originally the incident reportedly involved two male suspects, one armed with a rifle and another with a handgun. But police later said that there was only one suspect.  He was taken to the hospital after he was shot by police.

Listen to the actual police radio transmissions.  Here is the first 40 minutes, and this file is the last 40 minutes.
