Palos Verdes High's boys' cross country team enjoyed a sweep to romp to the Bay League championship last Thursday at Redondo High.
The Sea Kings scored the mininum 15 place points to 51 for second place Redondo. Finishing third and also advancing to Saturday's CIF-Southern Section Prelims is Manhantan Beach Mira Costa with 74.
Palos Verdes, which is currently the No. 2 ranked team in CIF-Division III, was led by senior Chase Zuckerman who won the race at 14 minutes and 58.42 seconds over the three-mile course. Teammates Jonah Diaz (14:59.38), Jacob Paulson (15:09.56), Juston Unno (15:19.62) and Peter Cohen (15:25.19) were second, third, fourth and fifth, in order.
"It was a dream come true," Zuckerman said of the Sea King sweep. "We wanted a sweep through the entire year."
The dream was also a birthday present for senior Cohen, who celebrated his 17th birthday on that night. Cohen completed the sweep by finishing fifth over sixth place Justin Caracoza of Redondo (15:28.64).
The Sea Hawks, who were last year's league champions but lost top runners Cody and Simon Schmidt who are now both at the University of California, Berkeley, along with two other key runners to graduation, had two other runners place in the top 10 in Tyler Caracoza (seventh place, 15:29.88) and Remington Besnoin (10th, 15:38.56).
Third place Mira Costa was led by eighth place Jason Boner (15:30.53) and ninth place Adam Perez (15:33).
Rolling Hills Estates Peninsula (93) and West Torrance (128) were fourth and fifth, respectively.
For the girls, Palos Verdes had a top individual finisher in sophomore Rebecca Mehra, who was clocked in 16:49.95, but it was Mira Costa that won the team title by one point over runner-up Redondo, 34-35, despite running without premiere junior Savannah Pio, who was sick. The Lady Mustangs, ranked No. 2 in CIF-Division II, were led by second place senior Aleyma La Croix in 17:04.87. La Croix came from behind to top Redondo senior Rachel Bush (third, 17:05.87) by one second.
"Our team has been coming together," Mehra said. "We had a lot of injuries. We're running faster in every race. This was a good race."
The Sea Kings took third at 68 to advance to the CIF-Division III Prelims. The Mustangs and Sea Hawks will be in Division II.
West was fourth at 95 and Peninsula was in the rear of the pack with 123.
The prelims in all Southern Section divisions will begin as early as 7 a.m. Saturday at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut with the top four teams in each heat moving on to the Championships at the same place on Nov. 21 beginning at 8 a.m.
The top eight squads from that will vie in the Californa State Championships at Woodley Park in Fresno on Nov. 28.
