Last Friday's Marine League football showdown between host Narbonne and Carson started out with a bang.

On the opening kickoff, Sean Parker sprinted 99 yards for a touchdown to give the Gauchos a quick 6-0 lead.

Hold it! The early show was only half over. Carson's Dwan Gill did his thing returning the Narbonne kickoff 97 yards for the score. Kicker Juan Sanchez added the extra point for a 7-6 lead.

Narbonne started off well with a 20-7 lead but Carson took advantage of Gaucho mistakes and wore them down for a 41-28 win as the Colts took sole possession of first place at 4-0. Carson is 7-2 overall.

The Gauchos scored two first quarter TD's on a 7-yard pass from quarterback Chad Dashnaw to wide receiver Bryan Douglas and Dashnaw's 14-yard run but, from there, the Colts took over with four unanswered touchdowns.

It started with 58 seconds left in the first period on a 5-yard run by running back Dion Willis, who rushed for 160 yards and two TD's and had three catches for 42 yards and another score.

Running back Myles Johnson gave Carson the lead for good on a 2-yard run with 9:56 remaining in the second quarter.

Willis scored both of the Colts' third period touchdowns on a 16-yard pass from Dashnaw and a 30-yard run, giving the Colts a 35-20 lead.

Narbonne (5-4, 3-1) got within seven points early in the fourth quarter on a 1-yard scoring run from running back Melvin Davis, followed by a two-point conversion run by Dashnaw but Carson put the game away on a 3-yard quarterback keeper from Torres.

"This was a big game for us," Carson head coach Todd Christensen said. "We weren't perfect but we played hard."

The Gauchos were plagued by four turnovers in their loss.

"We made a lot of mistakes," Parker said. "We could have beaten them. We hope to meet them, again, in the playoffs."

Carson comes home to face a 3-1 San Pedro team, coming off its 35-25 home win over Gardena last Friday at 7 p.m.

Narbonne hosts Banning in their league finale Friday at 7 p.m.

Earlier on Friday, Parker was honored after being chosen as one of 90 players (45 each for the West and East teams) to play in the United States Army All-American Prep Football Game on Saturday, Jan. 9 at 10 a.m. (Pacific Standard Time) at the Alamo Dome in San Antonio, Texas.

Parker is one of two South Bay players who will compete in the contest. The other is Gardena Serra High wide receiver-defensive back Robert Woods. Woods was honored at Serra on Monday.

They were chosen by the U.S. Army All-American Bowl Selection Committee, which includes SportsLink's network of regional directors from throughout the nation, Rivals.com and Tom Lemming.

Mira Costa 45, Leuzinger 6: Mira Costa High's football team took sole possession of first place in the Bay League by routing host Leuzinger last Friday.

The Mustangs dominated the Olympians with 465 total yards on offense to 255 for Leuzinger.

With the win, Mira Costa increased its Bay record to 4-0 and overall mark to 7-2, while the Olympians fell to 2-2 in league and 6-3 for the season. Palos Verdes helped the Mustangs by handing now second place Redondo (5-4, 3-1) its first Bay loss at 21-14 last Friday at Palos Verdes.

Sparking the Mustangs were their strong running attack of senior running backs Morgan Reece (96 yards and one touchdown on 15 carries) and Rico Wright (77 yards and a TD on six carries).

Also doing well for Mira Costa was Kyle Nunn who scored touchdowns on a 55-yard punt return and a 55-yard option pass from Jackson Morrow.

Leuzinger managed to have a strong performance by quarterback Te Shon Burton, who completed 12 of 25 passes for 175 yards and one TD, that of 30 yards to wide receiver Jared Simmons late in the fourth quarter.

Mira Costa will host rival Redondo in a league showdown Friday at 7 p.m. Leuzinger is in a must win situation for the playoffs as it visits West Torrance, which won its last two games over Palos Verdes and Peninsula after league opening losses to the Mustangs and the Sea Hawks, at the same time.

El Segundo 24, Lawndale 20: El Segundo High's football team moved into a tie for second place with Lawndale by defeating the host Cardinals last Friday.

The Eagles (6-3, 3-1) carried a 24-6 lead through three periods but Lawndale (5-4, 3-1) bounced back on a 4-yard scoring run by Jamal Fleming and a 2-yard touchdown run from Aaron Belton to get within four.

For El Segundo, quarterback Michael Bundy completed 20 of 26 passes for 225 yards and two touchdowns, that from 32 yards to Brice Savage and 15 to Nigen Nootbaar.

Fleming rushed for 106 yards and two TD's on 12 carries.

The Eagles hope to share the league title as they host South Torrance (2-7, 1-3) Friday at 7 p.m. The Spartans are coming off a miserable 52-7 home loss to cross town rival North Torrance last Friday.

The Cardinals must travel to league leading Centennial at the same time in Compton. The Apaches are 4-0 after rolling over Torrance, 41-7, last Friday at Centennial. They are currently ranked No. 7 in the CIF-Northwest Division.
