Last week on Larry King Live, with his mother and attorney by his side and millions watching, singer, Chris Brown expessed remorsefulness for his assault against Rihanna. To his credit, he showed humility, which is a virtue few celebrities are able to display. It remains to be seen whether his public apology was genuine or a public relations strategy. Your comments are welcomed.
Rihanna and the public may or may not forgive Chris Brown. However, as long as he has confessed his sin, God does. 1 John 1:9 confirms our Heavenly Father’s willingness to forgive our discretions- " If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us and cleanse us of all unrighteousness".
God loves a humble and contrite spirit and provides healing and restoration to those who admit their faults. 2 Chron. 7:14, Isaiah 57:15 and Psalm 34:18 drives this point home. If you need further proof humbleness touches the heart of God, you should read the story about King David’s confession before God.
David had committed adultery with Bathsheba and worst yet arranged her husband, Uriah’s death (2 Samuel 11:1-27). When the prophet Nathan reminded him of his selfish act, David immediately repented before God (2 Kings 12:13). Amazingly, his heart felt cry to God to give him a clean heart in Psalm 51:10 persuaded God to call David a man after His own heart.
By stark contrast, God reveals His hatred for pride when He dethroned King Saul because of his refusal to admit he disobeyed His instructions. Pride is one the 6 six things God says is an abomination to Him (Prov. 6:16-17). Look at what the following scriptures say about pride.
Prov. 16:5- "Everyone that is proud in heart is an abomination to the Lord, though hand join in-hand, he shall not be unpunished".
Prov. 8:13 "The fear of the Lord is to hate evil, pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the forward mouth do I hate".
Although God forgave David, he suffered the consequences of his sin. Likewise, it is going to take some time for Chris Brown to rebound from his serious mistake. Ironically, Chris' own mother, Joyce Hawkins was a victim of spousal abuse. Because of his celebrity status, Brown’s offense was exposed to the world at large. Rihanna’s dilemma just brings to light a dark secret that many women deal with everyday.
Domestic violence is systematic of an issue of the heart. The men and women who are guilty of inflicting pain on their spouse or significant other need to be changed from the inside. Only the love of Jesus Christ can deliver them from this serious character flaw.
As I wrote in my previous story about domestic violence, I am fully persuaded that God is calling His Church to provide a faith-based anger management programs for those who are prone to fits of rage. He is also looking to the Body of Christ to provide healing and resources such as housing and financial assistance for the victims of domestic violence.
