The US rebounded today from Tuesday’s 2-1 setback to Spain to notch a 1-0 victory over Malawi, in the Young Yanks’ second game of the 2009 Under-17 World Cup in Kano, Nigeria.

The US dominated possession but played a choppy match. What the Malawians lacked in offensive skill they made up for in speed and tenacity. Aside from their numerous offsides and the keeper error that allowed Alex Shinsky’s winner, the Malawians put in an admirable performance.

In what may have been a game saver, US defender Jared Watts broke up a near-certain Malawi scoring opportunity in the 43rd minute.

The US will face the United Arab Emirates next in group play, on Sunday at 10 am ET. The game will be televised on ESPNU.

There is no truth to the rumor that Madonna tried to adopt the Malawian team after the game. Thank you, I’ll be here all week. (Kidding aside, here is the link to Madonna's charity for Malawian children.)

As the expansion draft approaches, whispers and rumors about possible future Philadelphia Union players are bubbling up. The Salt Lake Tribune speculates that Real Salt Lake’s Andy Williams may be left unprotected. Tribalfootball.com notes that DC United captain Jaime Moreno has not ruled out reuniting with former coach Peter Nowak.
