As if the world doesn't have enough problems, there are idiot(s) out there who are poisoning our dogs. The events are occuring in Mesa, and it appears the only defense for pet owners right now is vigilence.
Apparently, someone is placing strychnine, a potent neurotoxin, into food that they then leave on the street. One vet reports three confirmed cases and other veterinarians suspect at least six other cases since Thanksgiving.
While residents have reported cases to police and Maricopa animal control, they are unable to take much action due to budget cuts.
The signs of strychnine poisoning include muscle tremors and seizures. The victim will become hyper-sensitive to touch, sounds and light. If immediate treatment is not given, the episodes will prove deadly.
While an antidote is not available, vets can do several things to save the animal, including such drastic measures as putting the animal into a medically-induced coma.
Officials urge residents to be cautious and extra vigilent when walking their dogs. Ensure your pet does not pick up any food from the ground, and if you find any, remove it immediately to prevent other animals or children from ingesting it.
Keep a watchful eye for unusual behavior and report strange behavior to police immediately. If you feel your pet has ingested anything unusual, take them to the veterinarian for emergency treatment.
