2009 Veterans Day Parade in NYC
Wednesday, November 11, 2009 marks Veteran's Day in the United States which is an annual American holiday honoring military veterans. Veteran's Day is a Federal holiday meaning most public services such as post offices, libraries, and, other government offices are closed, and, many cities and towns honor the military with parades on this day.
NYC Veterans Day Parade
One of the largest Veterans Day Parades in the NYC tri-state area takes place in Manhattan. In 2009, the parade will begin with the traditional Opening Ceremony, at the Eternal Light Monument in Madison Square Park. The ceremony is approximately one hour in length from 10AM to 11AM. The ceremony culminates in a wreath laying, 21-rifle salute and playing of "Taps."
The Veterans Day Parade then begins at 11:30 AM on Fifth Avenue from 26th Street to 56th Street. Typically over 400,000 people line up Fifth Avenue to pay their respects and show their support of the United States military. On average there approximately 20,000 people who participate in the Veterans Day Parade in New York City. The parade concludes around 3PM.
