The Plaza Hotel a review and comparison of new vs old
The Plaza is possibly the best known hotel in New York City. It's been in dozens of movies over the years from Home Alone 2 and Crocodile Dundee to North by Northwest and Barefoot in the Park. It has been the host to countless star studded weddings, and, other special event venues, and, it gained landmark status by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission in 1988.
I have personally been a guest at the Plaza over a dozen times (pre-2005 renovations) and also attended more social events in it's Ballroom and had tea in The Palm Court more times than I could possibly remember. So, when my husband informed me that we would be heading to The Plaza for an overnight stay, this time, I admit I went with a bit of skepticism. Even though it has been 4 years since the hotel under went extensive renovations, this was my first time staying over in the "new" Plaza.
As our cab pulled up, the outside looked the same and it felt like I was returning to an old friend. As I stepped inside, I was quickly reminded that a renovation had indeed taken place. The lobby area was completely changed, the shops were either gone or relocated. Truthfully, it was kind of sad. Now to someone who has never stayed at the hotel pre-2005 renovations, it would be hard to criticize, but, for someone like me, well, I kind of miss the the "tired" look of the old lobby.
As we headed upstairs to our room, this is where the changes really hit me for the better. The rooms had indeed been updated and feature Louis XV style French furniture, and, calming, neutral tones that complimented our room beautifully. And the amenities could not have been better from the flat screen television to our marble bath, it was a pleasure to stay here once again.
For anyone looking for a luxury hotel in a great location, albeit a bit overpriced at $855.05 including taxes for one night in a deluxe room midweek in November, The Plaza Hotel should be among your top 3 choices.
