With all of the bad news about the economy and jobs being hard to come by, I’ve found that a lot of clients have come to me extremely discouraged about the job search process. “But there aren’t any jobs out there” is a phrase that I hear over and over. Whether they are out of work or looking to leave their current job, the perspective is always the same. Notice how I use the word “perspective”? Of course there are jobs out there; but when there isn’t one that you want, it’s time to create the position yourself.

In marketing they often use the term “create the demand”, this is the same philosophy that you can use to land a new job. What steps do you take to make this happen?

1.    Create your personal marketing strategy – Who or what companies are your target audience? What need are they looking to fill? What are your strengths that can help grow their company? In what capacity could you help them? Full time? Consultant?
2.    Pick key influencers – Who are the key people in your life that know a lot of people? Who knows the right people?
3.    Bring yourself to market – Turn your personal marketing strategy into a succinct and powerful email message and send it out to your key influencers asking them to put you in contact with people who work at your desired companies.
4.    Promote – Use social media outlets such as Twitter & Facebook saying, “Looking for contacts at (blank) companies, any leads would be greatly appreciated”.

In this tough economy, just searching around Craigslist and updating your resume isn’t enough. It’s time to take matters into your hands and create your own luck. And even better, you’ll actually be doing work that you want to do!
