Chronic kidney disease is all too common in dogs. In fact, it is one of the leading causes of death for dogs. Keeping dogs on a proper renal diet will not cure them, but it will improve their quality of life, and typically can extend the number of years that they live.

There are specially designed commercial foods specifically for dogs experiencing renal failure. These diets are low in phosphorous and protein. Dogs kept on these special diets have been found to live three times longer than dogs who are not put on the special diet.  Additionally, and perhaps most importantly, this special diet keeps the signs of uremia at bay.

Uremia describes the clinic signs of renal failure, including anorexia, vomiting, weight loss, diarrhea and dehydration. Chronic kidney disease has no cure, so keeping the best possible quality of life for as long as possible is crucial.

In addition to providing a diet low in protein and phosphorous, the addition of Omega 3 fatty acids, and Vitamin D is recommended.

There are several ideas for homemade renal diets at B-Naturals.com. Other helpful tips for creating a homemade diet can be found at the Ehow.com article Holistic Treatment for dogs with renal failure.

Again, this is a progressive disease with no cure. However, symptoms can be managed for quite some time with the proper medical care and diet. Staying informed, keeping your dog on the proper diet, and going in for regular veterinary care will help to keep him comfortable for as long as possible.

Sometimes the best information does not reach its intended audience. Please take a moment to post this article to your dog groups or social networking sites and/or forward to friends. Hopefully it will reach those who need it the most.
