With the weather varying from nice to cold over the past couple of weeks, many people are interested in letting their cats outside to play. I know it sounds nice for your cat, but it is not a good idea.
There are many dangers outside for your cat. There are foxes that live in the sewers, dogs that can get out of their yard, and let’s not forget the humans that drive. Cats also fight other cats.
Cat fights can cause a lot of damage to your cat. Puncture wounds can lead to abscesses if not treated properly. Abscesses are full of bacteria so your cat will need a drain placed to prevent infection by allowing all the bacteria to drain out, on to your carpet. Cats also pass species specific disease. Feline leukemia is highly contagious as well as feline immunodeficiency virus. If you have a cat that goes outdoors they should be tested for these diseases annually.
Birds and small mammals are also placed at risk when you let your cat wonder outside. Small felines were not a natural predator in Denver, so these animals have not developed any form of defense.
Be kind to your cat and Mother Nature’s pets by keeping your cat inside where it is safe and comfortable.
