With lots of snow and ice out there, you want to keep your dogs paw pads nice and dry. After spending an afternoon out in the snow there can be lots of snow build-up in between your dog’s toes. This snow can actually turn into icicles.
Icicles can be very bothersome to dogs. They will often lick and lick at their paws after the icicles form, which can cause dermatitis. The dermatitis can lead to a lick granuloma or “hot spot”, the “hot spot” can ultimately lead to infection. This means a trip to the vet and an unnecessary bill.
Avoiding a trip to the vet can be very simple. When your dog comes in after playing in the yard or dog park, take a towel and wipe all the snow and moisture out of their paws. This also helps keep your floors dry and mud free.
Your dog may try to squirm away from you or run by when coming in the door. Stay strong and do not let them get away until all four paws are dry. 30 seconds of frustration will keep your dog comfortable in the long run and is much more affordable then a vet bill.
