Delicious and refreshing - the essential margarita!

I know this is hard to believe, but we're rapidly closing in on the end of summer. Yes, it is still August, but that only gives us 3 or 4 more weekends of real, live beach weather. And that means just a few more weekends of beach drinks. Now I know we talked about beach drinks made with rum not so long ago, but we're not in July anymore. This is Tequila Month here at Examiner.com, so I thought we could stand one last look at those beverages that make sitting in the sun and sand that much more relaxing.

And no, I will not be talking about shots of Patron or (gods forbid) Cuervo Gold. Those demon drinks have led to more than one night's memories lost to the mists of time (yeah, I'm looking at you Thursday, July 30th). So we will try to stick to the more beach-friendly concoctions that will make a hot day just a wee bit cooler.

I mean, by drinking it, of course... not pouring it over your head, or sitting in a tub of it. For that, all you need is a little ice water. Save the alcohol for internal cooling and you'll find your expenses dropping like crazy. Trust me... it's worth it.

Anyway, here are a few staples of the beach drink pantheon, complete with tequila suggestions, and the occasional twist.

  • Cactus Juice
    2 oz Tequila (Herradura Añejo)
    1/2 oz Amaretto
Sweet and sour mixMilagro Silver Tequila - a personal favorite for mixing
Pour all ingredients over ice, in order. Drink responsibly. Repeat.
  • Frozen Margarita
    3 oz Tequila (Sauza Gold)
    1 oz Triple Sec
    2 oz lime juice
    1 cup crushed ice
    2 tsp salt
    1 lime wedge
Throw first 4 ingredients in a blender, mix well, and serve in a tall glass, lined with salt and garnished with a lime wedge.
Toss an extra shot of fruity liqueur into the mix for an extra treat (try raspberry, for instance).
  • Tequila Sunset
    2 oz Tequila (Milagro Silver)
    1/2 oz Blackberry Brandy
    Orange juice
    1 orange wedge
    1 cherry
Pour tequila over ice and fill with orange juice. Top with blackberry brandy and garnish.
Definitely an improvement over the traditional sunrise.

So there you have it. A trio of tasty beach drinks to make you forget the traffic you faced during that 4 1/2 hour drive to Ocean City... but hopefully not enough to make you forget the rest of the weekend. But that's up to you. We're all responsible adults here, and I trust you to make the right decisions. Several times.

And then, call a cab so all those delicious decisions don't get you in trouble.

See you at the beach!
