Preseason - An Ernest Hemingway

August 6, 12:22 AM
by Mark Burlet, Baltimore Drink Examiner

Ernest Hemingway in 1950... nice beard, eh?
The night was humid and quiet, even for a Sunday. The young man sat still, his shirtless back sticking slightly to the tan leather couch. A paperback lay unopened at his side as his fingers idly flipped through the edges of each page. He glanced briefly toward the novel, but a lone sigh expressed his lack of interest. The book remained.

A restless boredom filled the room and gradually nudged the man into action. He slowly rose from the couch and crossed the room to the low slung coffee table on which rested the remote control. He grabbed the remote and moved leisurely towards the kitchen where he poured a glass of apple juice before returning to recline comfortably in front of the television. As the man pressed "Power" and began scanning the cable box for something decent, the air seemed to clear and a breeze pushed in through the open window to his right.

It was quick and unexpected. The television released the words carelessly, but the man was frozen by the revelation therein. He glanced unbelieving at the screen and sat up suddenly to bring his attention to the laptop on the edge of the couch. Calling upon the powers of the internet, the young man, whose name was Mark, searched rapidly to verify the news he had just heard. It was not easy to find. Yet after poring over many pages, he located the story that he had longed to read and read it thoroughly and happily, his lips mouthing the words.

Washington Redskins - 30, Indianapolis Colts - 16. Preaseason football had arrived. It was good.

Ok, so maybe that's not exactly how Hemingway would have written this... but I thought I'd give it a shot. I mean, what other writer has ever been manly enough that you would want him to announce the coming of a new football season? But still, stylistic tomfoolery aside, the above passage fairly accurately describes my evening this past Sunday, when... as clueless as a jaybird (or an oriole, perhaps?)... I randomly turned on ESPN to check the score of the St. Louis Cardinals game (they lost to Philly 5-4) and was surprisingly shown highlights of the first NFL preseason game of the season, the Hall of Fame game between Washington and Indy. Not to say that I'm a fan of either team, but the nearness of the football season had not struck me until that very moment.

Celebrating football season with a shot of Maker's...So perhaps it's still too early to begin throwing back beers and analyzing every play... preseason games usually just aren't that interesting. But it does mean there are a scant 4 weeks between now and the time my New Orleans Saints start to make their way through the NFC toward the playoffs. And many of you already know where I'll be... the nearest bar showing the game (usually Looney's) with my New Orleans crew loudly cheering on our boys. For now, however, I'll just raise a toast to all your teams out there (except the Falcons) and wish you the best o' luck in your 2008 season.

I only wish I could have shared one with ole "Papa" Hemingway. Even though he probably would have been a Bears fan...
