Just about every dog owner has asked the question, “Why doesn’t my dog listen to me?” Most of the time, the answer is simple, you’re not using their language. Let’s say you meet someone who speaks Spanish, but you only speak English. Would you expect them to understand what you’re saying to them? Of course not, but when it comes to our dogs, that’s exactly what most people do.
When communicating with your dog, remember that they are using their nose first, ears last. Yep, that’s right, their ears are the worst way to communicate with them! You can yell until you’re blue in the face, but all they will do is look at you or worse yet, do exactly what you told them not to do. Your body energy is negative and weak when you’re frustrated so yelling, trying to force a dog to “listen” will never work.
So you’re probably asking yourself, “What language does my dog understand?” The answer is body language! Because dogs use their nose as their primary sense, your movements & body energy are what they “listen” to. Let’s say your dog jumps on you and you just stand there and say, “No!” Chances are fairly high that your dog will continue to jump, you’ll get angry, continue yelling at them and nothing will change. But let’s say you simply move forward and take their space away from them…by doing this you’re saying, “Hey back off and respect my personal space!” Your dog will listen to your body language and finally understand what you’re asking of them.
So next time your pup acts up, think about how you can use your body language and energy and not your voice to control the situation. You’ll be amazed with the results!
