While the initial fear was H1N1, the new diagnosis for the ailing UFC heavyweight champion is mononucleosis. Lesnar’s challenger, Shane Carwin, had this to say on his website:
“Guys, my manager, Jason Genet, just told me that UFC 108 is not happening. Brock has mono, and what the UFC has told me is that I have earned the title [shot] but I have to wait for the title holder. I hope Brock gets well soon."
Mononucleosis is a highly infectious viral disease characterized by fever, soar throat and fatigue. Heavy physical activities should be greatly restricted in order to mitigate the risk of splenic rupture by the infected party. The disease is treated with antibiotics and rest.
The setback has forced Lesnar to withdraw from UFC 108 due to the fact he will not be able to resume training for another four to six weeks. This effectively leaves the UFC without a main event for the January pay-per-view.
At this time it is unknown when Brock will be able to step back into the octagon. All that is left to do is hurry-up and wait.
