The first thing President Obama said he was going to do as President is sign the Freedom of Choice Act. Thankfully, the Freedom of Choice Act did not become law. More information can be found in the article The Freedom of Choice Act: A Radical Attempt to Prematurely End Debate Over Abortion. There has been much past discussion about Obama concerning his stance on abortion. And more recent discussion given the current debate on health care reform.
Abortion is often spoken of in terms of reproductive rights by its proponents. For example, Cynthia Tucker writing on an Atlanta Journal Constitution blog Let women keep their abortion coverage places abortion under "reproductive rights." The biggest irony is to refer to a human baby as reproductive while killing him or her. What is actually being reproduced if it is killed? Why don't the babies have birth rights? These are questions the President should answer.
President Obama professes to be a Christian. His position on abortion though seems to be confused and lacking wisdom. In a recent interview with Major Garrett of FoxNews (transcript) Obama stated the following.
I believe in the basic idea that federal dollars shouldn't pay for abortions. But I also think we shouldn't restrict women's choices...
Then, reading Obama's record on abortion at Ontheissues.org shows that he desires to decrease abortion, atleast in word not necessarily via his voting record.
I suggested that perhaps we could agree on ways to reduce the number of women who felt the need to have abortions in the first place.
King Solomon
Where could Obama find wisdom on reducing abortion? King Solomon might offer some insight. It is written in 1 Kings 3:16-28 about King Solomon dealing with the two women who both claimed a certain child was theirs. What did Solomon do?
24 The king said, “Get me a sword.” So they brought a sword before the king. 25 The king said, “Divide the living child in two, and give half to the one and half to the other.
The mother of the child loved the child so much she was willing to give him up for the sake of his life. This is the type of wisdom to pray for Obama to seek. This is not an exact parallel to today’s situation though there is much wisdom to be gotten from Solomon.

A worried woman went to her gynecologist and said: ‘Doctor, I have a serious problem and desperately need your help! My baby is not even 1 yr. old and I’m pregnant again. I don’t want kids so close together.’
So the doctor said: ‘Ok, and what do you want me to do?’
She said: ‘I want you to end my pregnancy, and I’m counting on your help with this.’
The doctor thought for a little, and after some silence he said to the lady: ‘I think I have a better solution for your problem. It’s less dangerous for you too.’
She smiled, thinking that the doctor was going to accept her request.
Then he continued: ‘You see, in order for you not to have to take care of 2 babies at the same time, let’s kill the one in your arms. This way, you could rest some before the other one is born. If we’re going to kill one of them, it doesn’t matter which one it is. There would be no risk for your body if you chose the one in your arms.
The lady was horrified and said: ‘No doctor! How terrible! It’s a crime to kill a child!’
‘I agree’, the doctor replied. ‘But you seemed to be OK with it, so I thought maybe that was the best solution.’
He smiled, realizing that he had made his point. He convinced the mom that there is no difference in killing a child that’s already been born and one that’s still in the womb. The crime is the same!
Obama's Wisdom?
The above story seems to be in-line with the type of wisdom Solomon displayed. How could Obama learn from such wisdom and follow suit? If freedom of choice for abortion (for the pregnant not the baby) is such a necessity Obama could propose some caveats. The following are ideas for caveats that could be used before allowing a woman an abortion.
This is just a start. A number of other caveats could be suggested. Such caveats would help understand that decisions and actions have consequences. Once all requirements and accountability are removed important considerations for abortion are minimized.
Abortion is not and should not be akin to having a mole removed!
The scars of abortion can be very emotional. Just read some of the stories from women who’ve had abortions. Yes, even men are affected.
Of course, simply changing a law will not change someone’s heart. Though laws can make it more difficult to commit such an act. Changing a law could help someone consider what they are actually doing when getting an abortion. There is no harm in pursuing dialogue on such an immoral act via a change of law.
The answer for Christians is, of course, the Gospel of Jesus Christ which does change hearts. Since we live under a form of government that allows citizens to be involved and cause change the right moral thing to do is press on against abortion.
