Ford may have been teetering on the edge of oblivion like the other American automakers, but things are a little different in the blue oval world.

Finances aside (Ford has been functioning without government assistance), Ford is on the verge of introducing some fantastic new vehicles. They already build the second best (in my opinion) truck on the market. Regardless of my ranking, the new Ford F150 is a fantastic machine and its new style is bold, yet functional with cohesive power numbers, Ford has a great truck in their lineup.

Recently, Ford introduced their new Fusion Hybrid to the press. At first I thought it was another futile attempt at challenging the top ranking Toyota Prius. After reading the reviews and talking to a few of my automotive journalistic cohorts, I believe the new Ford Fusion Hybrid is a game changer. In fact, the new Fusion Hybrid may be the best hybrid on the market when it debuts.

A new player for Ford that may completely shake up the industry is the soon-to-come Ford Fiesta. This is no mere rebadged toy – this is a game-changer! The diesel is a 1.6 liter 4-cylinder, turbocharged diesel that offers 89 horsepower and 150 lbs feet of torque. I have no idea if that will make it here, but the 118 horsepower gasoline engine looks like a sure thing.

This Fiesta will be the closest competition that the standard Mini Cooper has had in our country – for good reason. All indications point to a fun, cheeky, well made, thrifty vehicle that seems larger inside than it is outside. Packaging has been likened to the Honda Fit as there is lots of space and both look slick.

Even the 2010 Ford Taurus looks like a contender against Toyota Camry and Honda Accord.

Like the Fiesta, I know little about the Taurus and will reserve my judgment for my later evaluations. Still, things are looking up in Ford’s future. I hope more European models come our way as they trump our selection by a significant amount. Time will tell how these things pan out, but I know Ford’s new plan is already working.

Good for you Ford!
