When will the fashion industry turn around? Brands that look like smashing success stories file for bankruptcy protection and lose backers. It was only a few weeks ago that critics were raving about Luella Bartley and her Luella line of clothing and accessories. The line is a favorite among bloggers and women who love the quirky colorful fashions. It seemed Luella was very much a darling of the media and a favorite of fashionistas.
Quirky British designer Luella Bartley announced this morning that her label Luella has ceased trading. Club 21, the global licensee for ready-to-wear and accessories for Luella since 2003, announced this morning via parent company VSQ Limited, that they it had "taken the decision not to invest further in its relationship with Luella Bartley Limited." Last month, the Luella's ready-to-wear producer, Carla Carini, closed unexpectedly, rendering Spring 2010 orders impossible to fulfill for the brand-an occurrence that greatly affected the decision of Club 21.
"This is a very disappointing situation for everyone involved with the brand," said Bartley in a statement. "I very much appreciate the support that VSQ has given me, but it is upsetting not to be able to protect jobs in this difficult economic climate. I love the Luella character and hope that after we have survived this challenging time the Luella girl can have an exciting future ahead of her, whichever incarnation she takes on next." As far as the brand's plans to find new backing, Bartley said, "We have a number of options open to us, and are considering these over the coming months."
Let's hope that someone comes forward to save the brand like what we just saw happen with Escada.
