Summer, Kids, and Cars—A Deadly Combination

July 7, 9:07 AM

It happens every summer. Like clockwork, someone leaves their kid strapped in an airtight car to bake under an unrelenting summer sun.

This happens year after year, and I’d like to know why. What possesses people to leave their little ones in what will soon become a furnace? Do they think the laws of nature do not apply to them? Or do they not “think” at all?

How does one forget about something as basic as heat? Is their memory so short they forget what it feels like to sit on hot vinyl? Or wrap their hands around a baking steering wheel? Or breathe in 120-degree air?

I find I keep asking myself the same question every year: What the hell is wrong with these people? It’s not like they’re teenagers who don’t know from anything but MySpace and YouTube. These are full-grown adults with a brain. But then again, some never let said brain get in the way of stupidity.

I’m not referring to legitimate accidents. There are those who are so preoccupied with work or family, or are out of their regular routine and running on “force of habit,” they truly forget about the child. I’m talking about those who feel inconvenienced having to drag the baby into a store and justify it by rationalizing that they’ll “only be a few minutes.” These people are worse than stupid. They’re lazy.

 Case in point:

Lorraine Fortilage, thirty-seven years old, (that’s right ... 37!) left her 14-month-old daughter in her SUV when she went shopping. It was a conscious decision, for when she explained it to the cops, she said she forgot the child was there, but then justified parking in a handicapped space because the child was handicapped. Another source reports she blamed her sister, saying she left the car with her.

Unbelievable! The only handicap that child has, is her mother.

This woman not only deserves serious jail time, but needs to be relieved of her parenting responsibilities as well; and no amount of beauty products will make her smart enough to raise a child. But maybe sitting her in a boiling car for an hour or so will smarten her up.
