Two of the super buys of the week – Del Monte canned tomatoes at Frys and mushrooms at Safeway – have me all set to brew up a pot of spaghetti sauce. Add in Frys 93% lean ground beef and I have the makings for meatballs. The bolillo rolls at Food City make for very nice small meatball sandwiches.

Food City has all the makings for the preparation of cheese enchiladas: chicken breasts, tortillas, enchilada sauce and longhorn cheese. For the vegetarian minded there are tostadas using refried beans, lettuce, tomato and grated cheese. Try a different kind of salsa this week based on tomatillos (green tomatoes). Finally, a really good buy is Food City’s (First and Ft. Lowell store) fresh roasted green chilies at $1 per pound.

Safeway has another super buy of Chicken of the Sea tuna at .59 a can. I see a tuna fish casserole in my future. Basha’s top sirloin steak suggests a batch of beef stroganoff. And Frys pork picnic roast is likely to be prepared to shred and served with barbeque sauce on rice or a roll.

Cooler weather suggests that soup season is just around the corner. Several stores had good prices on canned soups or the makings of fresh soup. I’ve been thinking lately of a cabbage and tomato soup. It’s made essentially just like stuffed cabbage without the meat: shredded cabbage, sauerkraut, diced tomatoes, diced onions, rice, vinegar, basil, garlic and parsley. Try serving it with heavy rye bread or one of Safeway’s artisan breads.

Sprouts had an excellent selection of salad makings, snacks and cheese. I especially like the avocados at 3 for $1, the Brazil nuts, Medjool dates, and baguettes. Sunflower can fill in anything missing, not to mention the Mountain High yoghurt. Sunflower’s Red Texas grapefruit at 5 for $1 is definitely in my future.
