Walk into your average grocery store, and you might be lucky to find one variety of coconut oil on the shelf. You might also find a bag of grated coconut in the baking isle. That would be about it.

Walk into a local natural food store such as Slow Pokes in Grafton, WI, or perhaps Back to the Best Country Store in Rubicon, WI  and you will find a variety of coconut products from raw coconut oil, to cold pressed coconut oil, raw coconut spread, coconut flour, coco butter and even entire cook books based on cooking with coconuts and coconut products.

Easterners know the benefits of coconuts and the milk and oils that come from them. They can do wonders for our skin and hair, not only when applying them on the outside, but also when ingesting them.  They have medium chain fatty acids which, rather than making us fat, actually have been proven to speed up our metabolism, and make us healthier!

Americans became so afraid of pure raw healthy fats and jumped on the “fake fat” band wagon that things like coconut oil and coco butter have gotten a bad rap over the years. Now, the truth is coming back around that the old tried and true natural products, just the way God made them really do work for our good, and the “fake stuff” that man has messed with has come to harm us in some very bad ways. Go figure.

So, perhaps instead of putting oleo on your child's toast, you may want to spread some raw coconut oil, coco butter, or just pure butter on it. Instead of spraying something out of a can onto your frying pan before cooking, you might want to melt some highly stable coconut oil on it. It only takes a dab, and it can add a really nice flavor. If you really don't care for the flavor of coconut, then the cold pressed is fine, and it doesn't have a flavor.

In the summer, if you put a light layer of coconut oil on your skin half an hour before stepping outside for the day, letting it bond with your skin, it works WITH your skin to fight against sunburn. Sunscreen actually weakens your skin's ability to fight against the sun, and then when you don't have your sunscreen with you, you are that much more in danger. Not only that, but the sun's rays are actually GOOD for you! We need our vitamin D! Sunscreens have chemicals in them that, especially when activated in the heat of the sun, cause cancer!

You can even buy some coconut water, which is a great natural drink for rehydrating, rather than those sugary drinks. They come in different juice flavors, too.

So, give coconuts another look. They aren't just for pina colatas..., although those aren't bad!
