For all the gluten-free fans of Elana Amsterdam and her blog, Tuesday night at Friedman's in Chelsea Market, was an important night, part of the New York section of her national book tour for "The Gluten-Free Almond Flour Cookbook."

This book is Elana's well-designed and informative introduction to a versatile gluten free ingredient not in use as frequently as it should be. Certainly there has not been much written about this nutritious, low-carb alternative to the all-too-starchy flours that often are contained in gluten-free foods.
Anyone familiar with Elana's blog can attest to her baking skills, but this book is more all-encompassing than a collection of desserts. There are breads, main dishes (vegetarian and non-vegetarian), pizza, quiche and sauce recipes. In addition, there is invaluable nutritional information, an in-depth description of ingredients and a helpful list of sources for them. In short, all you need to begin cooking with almond flour.
The recipes are well-written and the photography is spectacular. This is one of the most inspiring, informative gluten-free cookbooks around. Those who follow a gluten-free diet are fortunate to have such a skilled and engaging culinary expert working on our behalf.
