Despite Mark Sanford's efforts to hang onto his Governor's hat, it looks like senate is working hard to push him out of office over his extra-marital indiscretions.
After returning from a top-secret trip over father's day weekend, the governor of South Carolina admitted last week to carrying on an affair with an Argentinian woman, Maria Belen Chapur. What followed was a fumbling public apology and a clearly stated intention to remain in office.
"I would ultimately be a better person and of more service in whatever doors God opened next in life if I stuck around to learn lessons rather than running and hiding down at the farm." - Sanford in an email to his political action committee
Since the initial admission, Sanford also told The Associated Press that he's "crossed lines" with other women, although Chapur was the only woman who he had sex with. He described Chapur as being his soul mate.
“Despite the best efforts of my head, my heart cries out for you, your voice, your body, the touch of your lips, the touch of your fingertips and an even deeper connection to your soul,” - excerpt from an email from Sanford to Chapur.
As of Tuesday 13 of South Carolina's 27 GOP state senators have called on Sanford to resign.
"[Sanford] has lost his ability to lead, and I'm afraid he has lost his ability to function as a man." - Majority Leader Harvey Peeler in a statement to CNN
