Oh twitter-scandals, how did we ever get along with you?
The latest twitter controversy has been stirred up by Meghan McCain (yes, daughter of senator John McCain). The self-proclaimed new female face of the republican party tweeted a racy photo of herself last night that has caused quite the uproar.
McCain tweeted that she was spending a quiet night reading a biography on Andy Warhol and ordering takeout. So why all the fuss? The pic she posted, was, gasp, rather busty.
We admit, with all of the accusations of scandal flying around the web this morning, we expected something a bit more "racey," but there you have it. Too much boobage for a respectable young, 24-year-old woman like herself.
Apparently, a number of her almost 60,000 followers had negative responses to the pic. 15 minutes after the booby-pic, McCain tweeted: "so I took a fun picture not thinking anything about what I was wearing but apparently anything other than a pantsuit and I am a slut."
"This is why I have been considering deleting my twitter account," McCain tweeted later, "what once was fun now just seems like a vessel for harassment."
And then: "When I am alone in my apartment, I wear tank tops and sweat pants, I had no idea this makes me a slut", I can't even tell you how hurt I am."
Followed by: "ok I am getting the f**k off twitter, promise not to delete my account until I sleep on it, thank you for the nice words supporters."
McCain also tweeted an apology for the photo, still online this morning: "I do want to apologize to anyone that was offended by my twitpic, I have clearly made a huge mistake and am sorry 2 those that are offended."
According to the Detroit Free Press, the photos has been seen more than 67,000 times by 10:30 a.m. this morning.
McCain is a columnist for The Daily Beast.
She is also a republican who is pro-gay rights, and said this in a speech to a group of gay conservatives: “I am concerned about the environment. I love to wear black. I think government is best when it stays out of people’s lives and business as much as possible. I love punk rock. I believe in a strong national defense. I have a tattoo. I believe government should always be efficient and accountable. I have lots of gay friends. And yes, I am a Republican.”
