Gift shopping? Avoid the lines on Black Friday, shop at the Santa Fe Winter Showcase. Or if you can’t resist the sales, visit on Saturday or Sunday. Held by SWAIA, (Southwest Association for Indian Arts) this event is the off-shoot of the popular Santa Fe Indian Market held each August in the historic Santa Fe Plaza. The winter version now in its fourth year is much smaller. It is being held at the new Santa Fe Community and Convention Center for the first time. For early- bird shoppers, the market opens Friday November 27th at noon. Admission, $10.00, is for SWAIA members only (you can join at the door). General admission , $5.00 a person begins at 2 p.m.
This juried show has room for only 200 vendors. Because there are over 1,000 less spots than the in the summer market, it draws the crème de la crème of native artists and artisans. The Best of Show winners from the 2009 market are exhibiting and winners from past years are also showing.
If you or someone on your holiday gift list loves Native American art and hand-crafted items, this is the place to shop. If you can’t make the Winter Indian Market, plan to attend the Santa Fe Indian Market 2010, August 21st and 22nd. Make your arrangements early as this is the busiest weekend of the year in Santa Fe and lodging space fills up early. This year you can fly directly to Santa Fe. Flights are limited, to be sure of a seat, book now.
Opening night there is a concert by Native American flutist Robert Mirabal, a member of the Taos Pueblo. He was seen in the recent Lifetime TV movie, Georgia O’Keeffe, playing Tony Luhan husband of the infamous Mabel Dodge Luhan. Also on the schedule is the Native American Cinema Showcase. Kids will enjoy the hands-on activities planned for them. There are also artists demonstrations throughout the weekend..
If you are in Santa Fe or Northern New Mexico this weekend, add this event to your to-do list.
