Diet sodas, having no calories, seem like a logical alternative to regular, sugary sodas when you are trying to lose weight. Lately, though, there has been more and more information pouring in concerning the risks surrounding the calorie-free counterpart.
In a study just released, it was found that women consuming two or more diet sodas could double their risk of declining kidney function. More specifically, those that drank at least two sodas per day had a 30% drop in a measure of kidney function. The study's findings were presented at the annual meeting of the American Society of Nephrology in San Diego on Saturday, October 31, 2009.
The study consisted of over 3000 women and was part of the Nurses' Health Study. According to the Nurses' Health Study website, "Nurses' Health Studies are among the largest and longest running investigations of factors that influence women's health."
While the study did suggest the link between diet drinks and kidney function decline, it did not reveal what exactly caused the trend. More research will be needed to find the answer to that question.
Other studies on the effects of consuming diet soda revealed that diet soda drinkers are at a higher risk of developing metabolic syndrome. Metabolic Syndrome is a precursor for type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
As more studies on the effects are diet sodas are being performed every day, it is becoming more clear that diet sodas aren't the answer when it comes to replacing sugar-filled drinks. There is, however, one alternative that is clearly the best...water!
