After reading a fellow Examiner's article about how important it is to spend these precious busy days with our kids, I made a mental note to do that with Lincoln, dispite his age. And in doing that, I've noticed a change in myself. As a family, we have slowed down and "taken the long way home," literally. This change from the usual holiday hustle and bustle has honestly made the season more relaxing and fun.
Searching out holiday lights in our neighborhood and downtown, taking quick, rejuvinating walks in the freezing temperatures, and listing to holiday music during dinner are just a few of the fun ideas we had to make the most of Lincoln's first Christmas.
As a family, and like many other families we know, we drastically scaled back our holiday spending. This made it so much more enjoyable to search for the perfect gift for our nephew in the great toy store Kazoo & Co, which I've loved since I was a child. There is honestly something about Christmas toy shopping that can bring back so many great holiday memories (why did they move the ice skating rink on Fillmore, I LOVED skating there).
My message, enjoy this time with those new little babies. Show them the lights, sing holiday music to them, read them stories about Santa and reindeer, start those holiday traditions with your new family that you loved as a child, or that you want your children to love. This is their first holiday and we will never get this time back. Relax and enjoy it!
