MILWAUKEE - Three unanswered goals wasn't enough to beat Chris Chelios and the Chicago Wolves Wednesday night, as the Admirals fell to the team 4-3 in regulation.
Chicago was first on the board, scoring 2 goals midway through the 1st period (from Anthony Stewart and Tim Stapleton, respectively). Two minutes later, Milwaukee asnwered with 2 goals of their own. Goal one for the Admirals came from forward Ryan Maki, with assists from Nick Spaling and Triston Grant. It was Maki's first goal of the season, and just the 3rd shot of the game for the squad.
One shift and :54 later, Milwaukee evened the score with goal from forward Wacey Rabbit. Ads forward Mark Van Guilder retrieved the puck from the blue line and was able to get it to Rabbit, who walked in Chicago netminder Drew MacIntyre and backhanded it over his left shoulder. The first period ended with Admirals captain Nolan Yonkman going after Chicago's Joey Crabb after Crabb ran Ads forward Ryan Jones into the far boards. The scuffle, which was the only altercation of the night (which is uncommon for the 2 teams), resulted in a Chicago power-play afte Yonkman was assessed an extra roughing minor.
The Admirals opened the second period with a power-play goal from forward Mark Santorelli. With just :21 left on the power-play, Santorelli beat MacIntyre with a wrist shot from about 15 feet out in front of the net. The goal, which was assisted by Ben Guite and Robert Dietrich, marked Santorelli's 3rd of the season.
That would be the last time Milwaukee would light the lamp Wednesday night, as Chicago went on to score midway through the second period (scored by Arturs Kulda and assisted by Athony Stewart and Johnny Pohl) and then again at the 9:44 mark of the third period (scored by Tim Stapleton and assisted by Chris Chelios). Milwaukee had an opportunity to send the contest into overtime with a late 3rd penalty called on Chicago for delay of game. Unfortunately, the Admirals power-play was uninspired and sloppy, and the team failed to convert.
With tonight's loss, the Admirals sit at 5-5-1 on the year, good for 5th place in the West Division. The Admirals return to the ice Friday night to face the 4-4-1-2 Peoria Rivermen.
