We are surrounded by chemicals. They are on our new clothes, in our carpet fibers, in the air that we breathe and the water that we drink. We wash our hair with them and smear them on our skin. Many of these chemicals, such as fragrances and methyl parabens, may be carcinogens or neurotoxins yet it is hard to avoid them. Paying attention to the number of products that we use in a day is humbling. Can we avoid all these toxic chemicals? Should we even try?
There is no easy answer.
I recently took my children swimming in a lake and proudly slathered them with natural sunscreen devoid of toxic chemicals. It seemed like the right thing to do. However I didn't read the directions that mentioned the need to reapply it every 30 minutes. So instead of saving them from carcinogenic ingredients I exposed them to carcinogenic solar rays, and soothed their burnt shoulders the next day.
Unfortunately those harsh chemicals often create products that work and getting used to their natural cousins may take a little adjustment. Yet it is probably worth the effort. Check out this great site to help you figure out how dangerous your favorite products are and find safer ones.
