Oct. 25 starting at 2 p.m. at Flushing Town Hall, musicians from Juilliard will perform pieces by Chinese composers. All composers on the program were among the first graduates of Chinese conservatory training following the Cultrual Revolution. Among the pieces on the program is Bright Sheng's third string quartet.
Queens
Beginning Friday Oct. 23, the York College theater arts department will stage "Fabulation or the Re-education of Undine" by Lynn Nottage. The play will have a four performance run at the York's Performing Arts Center. Nottage won the 2009 Pulitzer Prize for Drama for her play "Ruined" and a 2007 Outer Critic Circle Award for outstanding off-Broadway play for "Intimate Apparel." Tickets: $7.
Manhattan
On Friday Oct 23rd and Saturday Oct 24 at 7:30 p.m. in Zankel Hall at Carnegie Hall, pipa player Wu Man will musically kickoff Carnegie Hall's "Ancient Paths, Modern Voices" program. The 3-week long festival will focus on Chinese culture. Ticket prices for these two performance begin at $32.
On Saturday October 31 at 5 p.m., the Juilliard Orchestra will perform: Mendelssohn's Hebrides overture and Brahms Symphony #2. Following a week of rehearsals with one of the world's foremost conductors, the orchestra will be led in concert by Bernard Haitink.
On. Oct. 17 El Museo del Barrio reopened to the public after over a year-long renovation. The initial exhibit in the new space will feature the work of pre-World War II, New York- based Caribbean and Latin American artists.
